Can Sunshine Help a Healthy Smile?
There are a lot of factors that can influence the look and function of your smile. The most well-known are genetics, oral hygiene, nutrition, and age. While these are the most obvious influencers, turns out that sunshine intake can be just as important as any of them! This week we are going to explore how soaking up a few rays here and there will do wonders for your smile.
The Sun Gets You Smiling
The winter can be a hard time for a lot of us in the Great White North. At the core of the issue, the lack of sunshine has an immense effect on people’s moods. It’s no surprise that many of us suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). So when the sun finally starts to peek its head out in spring, we flash our grins more and more often because our brains are starting to feel better.
Vitamin D is the Key
In addition to feelings of wellbeing, the sun also gives off significant amounts of vitamin D. This is important for your oral health in two ways:
-
- Calcium Absorption. We all know that calcium is great for our teeth and bones. What is lesser known is that our body requires vitamin D in order to absorb the calcium. Adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D help reduce bone loss over time and may even decrease your chances of losing teeth.
- Combats Periodontal Disease. Aside from helping your body absorb calcium, vitamin D also functions as an anti-inflammatory. Periodontal disease, the number one cause of tooth loss, is inflammation of the gums due to harmful bacteria. Keep the inflammation down by taking in those rays and your risk of periodontal disease is significantly decreased.
It’s easy to soak up the sun in the summer time as long as you wear sunscreen and protect your skin. If you can’t be outdoors, get your vitamin D intake by eating foods like eggs, fish, or orange juice. Still afraid to show off your pearly whites?
